Changing demands in the car hire market

A recent survey by carrentals.co.uk has shown rising fuel costs to be a major factor for customers when renting a car. The company has seen a 10% rise in bookings for economy and budget cars which they believe is down to the fuel efficiency of these car hire types.

Economy and mini cars were responsible for 50% of the companies’ bookings in 2008 up 10% on the previous year. The only long haul destination to make it into their top 20 booked destinations was Orlando. Their most popular destinations included Malaga, Faro, Majorca, Heathrow and Alicante.

They believe that this trend may be a factor of the current economic climate with customers opting for short cheaper trips abroad rather than lavish holidays in the US or further afield.

The survey also reported a rise in the numbers booking collision damage waiver insurance which guarantees customers a refund on their excess if they have an accident that causes damage to their hire car.

In these tough economic times it seems customers are becoming a lot more choosey about who they book with. They now spend much more time going from website to website to find the best possible deal.
